15.45 MEDIVAC Lifeguards
were alerted to a 20 year old girl who had sustained injuries to her ankle
whilst climbing in the cove. She had jumped approximately 8-10 foot onto a
crash mat below, however it was suspected she may have broken her ankle. Gemma
Lewis, Chris Page and Rhys Brothers attended the scene and requested an
ambulance and assistance from HM coastguard. The casualty was made comfortable
and ice applied to her ankle, but due to the difficult terrain of the
surrounding rocks it would have been difficult to move the casualty without
causing further injury and putting the rescuers in danger. The Ambulance and
Coastguard arrived at approximately 16.00. It was decided the easiest and
safest method of extraction would be winching by helicopter. The RAF Sea King air
sea rescue helicopter ‘Rescue 169’ was dispatched to the scene and arrived at
16.30. It landed on the beach and the winchman prepared the casualty ready for
winching. Gemma Lewis remained with the casualty to assist the paramedics and
winchman whilst Chris Page kept the public at a safe distance on the beach in
the lifeguard 4x4 and Sarah Davies kept the public back from the cliff edges on
the top of the common with the assistance of a police officer. Rhys Brothers
returned to man the lifeguard station. The helicopter winched the casualty and
transferred her to hospital at 16.50.
