MEDIVAC 12.10 - 68 year old female tripped whilst getting out of car landing awkwardly on her hip. Complaining of pain and numbness in left left. Suspected that the lady had broken her hip. Casualty was monitored and made comfortable by Chris Bluck (voluntary lifeguard) and Gareth Davies (BCBC lifeguard). Ambulance called to take the lady to hospital.
RESCUE 15.00 - Rescue water craft launched to rescue a 14 year old boy on surf board struggling in the current near the point. 2 surfers paddled across to assist whilst the RWC was being launched. The boy was picked up by the RWC and returned to the beach where he was given safety advice.
The RWC remained on patrol at the point following the rescue and was involved in these additional incidents:
x3 ASSISTANCE 15.10 - 3 surfers all swept towards point due to current. Each was picked up by the RWC and transferred to a safer area of the bay down towards the golf club.
ASSISTANCE 15.30 - A 57 year old male capsized his kayak in the area of the point. He was swept around the point by the rip current and was in close proximity to the rocks. Due to the surf conditions and his proximity to the rocks the RWC had some difficulty getting close to him. The RWC made contact but the man didn't feel he had the strength to pull himself onto the sled. At that moment a wave broke over the RWC and washed the man back onto the rocks. He was assisted from the water by land based lifeguards who had climbed down onto the rocks to assist.

In very large challenging surf conditions lifeguards at base alerted lifeguards on the beach of 2 surfers drifting rapidly in the very
strong current on the incoming tide. The surfers appeared unaware of the danger they were in and were rapidly drifting towards the point. Due to the conditions exit from the water would have been impossible once they had drifted past the headline in Rest Bay.
The beach was red flagged due to the conditions with waves with 6-8ft faces and very strong cross shore winds. All water users other than the 2 surfers had left the water.
The RWC which was in the process of being recovered was relaunched to proceed out to the surfers and give safety advice and advise them to return to shore. When the RWC arrived on scene the surfers were very close to drifting past the point. Lifeguards Nathan Evans and Gavin Davies continued to monitor the situation from the beach but due to the size of the surf and reflection of the sun it was very difficult to monitor the situation from the beach or the lifeguard station. Volunteer lifeguard Chris Page relocated in the 4x4 to the top of the headland to provide surveillance and provide other lifeguard units with regular updates on the situation as the RWC driver was unable to partake in radio com's due to the need to concentrate on the conditions.
As experienced IRB driver Gareth Davies was present at the station it was decided to also launch the IRB. This provided additional safety cover for the RWC driver should he get into difficulties and meant both surfers could be helped quickly if both required assistance simultaneously. Once the surfers made it back to shore the RWC and IRB were both recovered.
Both surfers had been unaware of the dangerous location they were in and fortunately made it back to shore unaided before the situation evolved further.

old surfer who was drifting dangerously close to the the point at Rest Bay. He
was struggling to paddle against the very strong current. The IRB got to him
through heavy surf just as he started to drift passed the point. The IRB had to

year old kite surfer lost his kite board and was in difficulties approximately
100m off the point at Rest Bay. The tide was fully out and he was drifting in
direction of Hutchwns point. The Surf Rescue IRB was launched and initially
stood by as the man wished to swim ashore. After approximately 5 minutes he
realised this would not be possible so ditched his kite and swam ashore whilst
the rescue boat recovered his kite. Whilst the IRB returned back into the main
bay it performed a quick search for the kite board which was recovered and
returned to the kite surfer.
17.50 RESCUE A girl in her 20’s on a body board was
battling against the strong current and drifting in the direction of the point.
The current was particularly strong due to the combination of the largest tides
of the year and a strong SW wind. The Surf Rescue IRB was launched going out
through 4-5 foot surf and rescued the girl seconds before she would have been
swept onto the rocks.
18.30 ASSISTANCE A boy on a surf board was assisted back to

16.30 RESCUE A 35 year old windsurfer had got into
difficulties approximately 200m off the point at Rest Bay. He was struggling
against the wind and tide and drifting rapidly in direction of Hutchwns point.

few minutes due to progress being hindered by heavy seas. On arrival it was
decided best action would be to de-rig the sail in order to save his equipment.
Once the kit was packed up the IRB had drifted well passed Hutchwns point. The
windsurfer and equipment was returned safely to the beach at Rest Bay at around
