Rescue Tuesday 26/08/14

RESCUE 16.45 - Rescue water craft launched to patrol point area by volunteer lifeguard due to large surf and strong current. The surf conditions were some of the largest of the summer. A number of surfers were given safety advice as they were drifting rapidly towards the point. One surfer was struggling in the strong current and getting blown out by strong offshore winds and was having difficulty trying to catch a wave into the beach. He was in danger of being swept around the point. He was picked up by the RWC on the rescue sled and transferred to a safer area of the beach down towards the golf club.

Further Info on the Lands End to Rest Bay Ride #LE2RB
Following the theft of the ATV from Rest Bay Lifeguard Club in October 2012 our ability to launch our rescue craft and respond quickly to casualties on the beach were both in jeopardy. Potentially lives were at risk. It also meant that our ability to hold sea based training sessions for our nippers and juniors might not be possible. These sessions needed a safety boat present whilst they took place and without an ATV it was not possible to tow the IRB onto the beach.

Thanks to the support of the community we raised considerable funds towards a replacement vehicle but need to raise more to cover the full costs. To do this a team of our lifeguards will embark on a charity cycle later this month to raise funds towards the cost of the replacement vehicle. Click here to find out more about the #LE2RB ride

Arran has grown up on the beach and come through the club from Nippers. He regularly competes for the club in surf lifesaving competition as well as working on Rest Bay as a local authority lifeguard.

Outside of Rest Bay he's entering the third year of a degree in music at Falmouth University. Being based in Cornwall gives him an advantage for the first leg of the cycle as he's familiar with cycling the roads around the area.

Along with not being mentally "all there" it will be a fantastic personal challenge and it's for a great cause!

Not as much as I should have! Currently in talks with DFS to see if they can supply me with a comfy saddle for the journey...

Lands End to Rest Bay Ride #LE2RB - Meet The Team - Gavin Davies (support crew)

Gavin has just graduated from Plymouth university with a 2:1 in history and politics. He's worked as a local authority lifeguard at Rest Bay for a few seasons and been a club member right through from nippers. He's competed for the club at Surf Lifesaving comps until he reached the seniors and his small size meant he could easily weave between other competitors whilst competing in beach flags. Although retired from competition there is a rumour he might make a 2014 comeback.

1) Why did you decide to take part in the Rest Bay 2 Lands End Cycle?
I decided to take part in the fundraiser because it is for such a good cause, the ATV not only gives huge benefits to club activities but also daily patrols of the beach in the summer.

2) How have you prepared for the cycle?
I've been preparing pretty much every day for the cycle. As I am part of the on hand support I've been practising some of the inspirational messages I am going to be shouting at the riders.

3) What are you looking forward to most about the cycle?
Getting the chance to push the riders to their limits, having some great rememberable banter and also seeing some of the beautiful scenery we will be traveling through.

4) How long have you been a member of Rest Bay Lifeguard Club?
15 years.

5) Currently living?
At home with my Mum and Step Dad.

6) Favourite Food?
I love Mexican dishes, and also you can't beat a good burger ;)

7) Favourite Beach?
Rest Bay is definitely in my top 10, others include Gwithian in South Cornwall and Sennen Cove.

8) Nicknames?
Gavlaa, Midget, Hobbit haha.

9) Favourite music right now?
Kings of Leon (their old stuff) and Tomorrow's Tulips.

10) One thing you can't leave home without?
As much as it pains me to say, my Phone... It's the source of all my information.

11) Favourite past time?
Surfing, skating and most sports.

12) Future plans?
Hopefully going traveling next year which will be sick!
